Chanel’s latest collection draws inspiration from Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s debut high jewelry line in 1932, a lesser-known part of the brand’s history. The celestial-themed pieces, including a collar necklace adorned with shooting stars and a diamond ring encircled by satellite stones, pay homage to Chanel’s original creations from 90 years ago. Commissioned by the London Diamond Corporation during the Great Depression, the jewelry line, known as Bijoux de Diamants, aimed to promote the diamond industry and garnered significant attention at the time. Although no archival sketches of the original pieces exist, Chanel’s Fine Jewelry Creation Studio director, Patrice Leguéreau, drew inspiration from a film discovered a decade ago, which provided insight into the collection’s designs. Recreating the pieces based on descriptions like “a superb comet” and “flexible rays,” Chanel brings back these elusive yet iconic pieces from its pioneering past, showcasing their timeless appeal.
