ตามรายงานของ Eater Austin เชฟ Mashama Bailey ผู้ชนะรางวัล James Beard Award ได้ตัดสินใจปิดร้านอาหารทั้งสองแห่งของเธอในเมืองออสติน รัฐเท็กซัสในวันอาทิตย์นี้ Bailey และ Johno Morisano หุ้นส่วนทางธุรกิจได้ร่วมกันเปิดร้านกาแฟสบายๆ อย่าง The Grey Market และร้านอาหารใต้ Diner Bar ในปี 2022 ทั้งคู่ตั้งอยู่ที่โรงแรม Thompson Austin

One of the most powerful chefs in the culinary world is leaving the Lone Star State.
James Beard Award winner Mashama Bailey will close her two Austin, Texas, restaurants on Sunday, as reported by Eater Austin. Bailey and her business partner Johno Morisano opened the casual café the Grey Market and the Southern restaurant Diner Bar in 2022, both located at the Thompson Austin hotel.
“The Thompson Hotel’s ownership is continuing to internalize all [food & beverage] operations," said Bobby Hernandez, the general manager of both spots, in an email to Eater. Hyatt, the parent company, began this process earlier this year. Melina Indrasena, the Thompson’s revenue and reservations manager, confirmed the closing date.
Bailey gained fame as the chef behind the Grey in Savannah, Georgia, where she serves Port City Southern food, featuring dishes like grits topped with foie gras and quail with Creole sauce. She was named Best Chef: Southeast by the James Beard Foundation in 2019 and won the Outstanding Chef award in 2022.
The Austin restaurants were Bailey’s first expansion outside of Georgia, although she and Morisano plan to open a restaurant in Paris later this year or early next. Bailey has also been featured in an episode of Chef’s Table and has a MasterClass on cooking Southern fare.
The closure of Diner Bar and the Grey Market is part of a larger trend in Austin hotel restaurants. The Thompson also previously housed Wax Myrtle’s, which closed at the end of last year and was replaced by a Mexican restaurant in March. Similarly, two restaurants at the Hyatt Centric Congress Avenue, opened by San Antonio chef Steve McHugh in February 2023, closed at the beginning of this year.
In a sometimes underwhelming hotel-restaurant landscape, Bailey’s Austin eateries were a bright spot. While Austin is losing her acclaimed cooking, the Grey remains in Savannah, and Bailey will soon be operating in Paris.
