Somewhere along the way, the G-Wagen, like Philippe Starck’s gold-plated AK47 table lamp, became a hipster fashion accessory. But make no mistake: Mercedes’s G-Class is an uncompromising new 9-speed automatic transmission, the AMG G 63, priced from $156,650, offers five different driving modes as well as three dedicated off-road settings: Sand, Rock and Trail. Handling, agility and ride quality have all been improved, in part thanks to rack-and-pinion steering and a new independent front suspension. Despite its brawn, the surge of power is S-Class smooth, while the supremely luxurious and quiet cabin is now properly suited for highway cruising—historically, not a G-Wagen strong suit. As always, its vault-like doors shut with the assurance of a Stockinger safe, a satisfying counterpoint to the Burmester Surround Sound System.
