The world’s first 3-D printed hotel is set to transform West Texas, along with an entire neighborhood of 3-D printed homes. Liz Lambert, the local hotelier behind the famed desert campground El Cosmico in Marfa, announced plans for this visionary 62-acre development that integrates cutting-edge 3-D printing technology.
Lambert expressed her excitement about this project, stating, “This evolution of El Cosmico is something I have been working toward for years.” She envisioned a comprehensive experience at El Cosmico, featuring amenities like a pool, bathhouse, hammam, restaurant, and space for workshops and activities. With the collaboration of architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Austin-based 3-D printing company Icon, her dream is becoming a reality on a stunning 60-acre plot on the town’s outskirts.
The 37-home community, designed by Lambert, BIG, and Icon, is scheduled to break ground this year, with residences priced from the upper $900,000s. Douglas Elliman’s Emily Waldmann and Megan Gallagher are handling the sales, which began in early January. The homes will offer three different floor plans, inspired by cloud-like shapes, ranging from two to four bedrooms and 1,587 to 2,601 square feet in size.
The homes, inspired by silos and designed to blend with the surrounding landscape, will feature lavacrete walls—a cement-based mixture created by Icon. Each residence will include outdoor living areas with back decks, showers, fire pits, and plunge pools, overlooking the picturesque David Mountains.
Lambert emphasized the revolutionary nature of 3-D printing technology in home design, noting the unique organic quality of the printed material. The Sunday Homes will offer residents an unparalleled connection to nature, appearing as if they have emerged magically from the earth.
In addition to the innovative homes, the property will feature an open-air bathhouse, offering a holistic approach to health and wellness. Amenities will include a Hammam, sauna, cold plunge, hot tubs, treatment yurts, and a “reset” room for relaxation. Residents will also enjoy a new bar and restaurant, a communal kitchen, and a circular infinity pool.
“The Sunday Homes offer a chance for people to dive a bit deeper into the El Cosmico ethos and community,” Lambert explained. “There’s nothing like spending the evening sitting around a campfire under a vast canopy of stars and then taking a few steps home to bed.” With this innovative development, Lambert aims to create a truly immersive and unforgettable experience in Marfa.
