Last week, Sotheby’s made headlines by announcing the auction of one of Claude Monet’s iconic haystack paintings, expected to fetch over $30 million. Now, Christie’s is poised to rival that with an upcoming sale featuring a Vincent van Gogh masterpiece.
During its 20th Century Evening Sale on May 16, Christie’s will offer Vincent van Gogh’s painting “Coin de jardin avec papillons,” with estimates reaching as high as $35 million. Painted by van Gogh between May and July 1887, the artwork depicts a flower bed in the public gardens at Asnières, showcasing the artist’s distinctive brushstrokes in vibrant shades of green, blue, and pink.
Christie’s auction is a significant event in the art world, spanning impressionism, modern art, and the postwar period. With 64 exceptional lots on offer, the auction house anticipates total sales ranging from $340 million to $500 million. Van Gogh’s garden scene is expected to make a substantial contribution, supported by an array of other remarkable works.
Among the highlights is David Hockney’s “A Lawn Being Sprinkled” from 1967, estimated to fetch $25 million to $35 million, sourced from the collection of Norman Lear and his wife, Lyn. Additionally, Andy Warhol’s “Flowers” from 1964, featuring the only 82-inch version with all four flowers painted using DayGlo paint, could sell for $20 million to $30 million. Pablo Picasso’s “Femme au chapeau assise,” created in 1971, is also in the same price range.
Two Monet paintings will also grace the auction block, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the first impressionist exhibition. “Moulin de Limetz” from 1888 is expected to fetch $18 million to $25 million, with part of the proceeds benefiting the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art for future acquisitions. Another Monet piece, “La Roche Guibel, Port-Domois” from 1886, is anticipated to sell for $6 million to $8 million.
The complete selection will be available for public viewing at Christie’s New York from May 4 to May 16 before the evening auction. This exhibition offers art enthusiasts the opportunity to appreciate these masterpieces up close before they find new homes through auction.
