An incredibly rare June 1938 copy of Action Comics No. 1 is poised to break records at auction. With just four pedigreed copies known to exist, this particular copy, graded CGC Very Fine+ 8.5, has already garnered bids of $3.5 million at Heritage Auctions. It’s expected to become the most valuable comic book ever auctioned, surpassing the $5.3 million sale of a 1939 copy of Superman No. 1 in a private sale in 2022.
Barry Sandoval, vice president of Heritage Auctions, highlighted the significance of Action Comics No. 1, stating that it represents the genesis of the superhero genre and the medium’s evolution into what it is today. With only about 100 surviving copies known, and just two unrestored copies graded higher than 8.5, this pedigreed copy stands out as a true treasure.
In addition to the CGC-graded copy, Heritage is also offering a professionally restored copy of Action Comics No. 1 with an Apparent 8.0 grade, currently attracting bids of $82,500. While this example may not be as highly graded, it presents an opportunity for collectors to acquire a fantastic-looking copy at a relatively lower price point.
For those intrigued by Superman’s origins, the auction includes a three-page letter from Jerry Siegel, the hero’s co-creator, outlining his vision of Clark Kent to attract cartoonist Russell Keaton. This document, never before available publicly, sheds light on the early development of the iconic character, whose debut was illustrated by Joe Shuster.
