What happens when hoteliers behind iconic properties like the Carlyle, Gramercy Park Hotel, and Beverly Wilshire head to family-oriented, occasionally crunchy Vermont? Can a 5-star boutique hotel dripping with urbanity survive in a seasonal snow village with just 77 residents as of 2020? Meet the petite grand experiment called the Weston.
Set within the Green Mountains, the property opened in late 2023 at 630 Main Street in Weston. The family Sharp, helmed by Peter Sharp, son of the late Peter Jay Sharp, who once owned the Carlyle and ran Delmonico’s, are the brains behind this nine-key inn.
Does the Weston live up to the family name? Robb Report checked into the best room: room No. 8. This second-floor suite includes a separate living room and bedroom, each with its own fireplace, and a large bathroom. The wet bar was stocked with drinks, snacks, and liquor, with appropriate glassware for various cocktails.
The hotel spans two buildings, with suites, a small gym, and a yoga studio. The spa offers massages and facials, and the suite’s expansive soaking tub compensates for the shorter service menu.
There is only one dining room, the Left Bank, now the town’s best restaurant. Executive chef Brett Combs offers a quintessential French menu featuring oysters, caviar, steak au poivre, and duck confit. The red-wine-braised beef cheeks are a highlight. For dessert, the cheese plate showcases Vermont’s finest.
The Left Bank, open to the public, is lively, with regulars at the bar and private dining in the wine cellar. The Weston aims to attract a consistent customer base with summer activities like bocce courts, fire pits, and porch space. In winter, curated excursions are offered, like glass blowing at Manchester Hot Glass with Andrew Weill.
The Weston may not match the grandeur of urban haute hotels, but with its exacting standards, superior service, and luxe amenities, it’s now the best little thing in Vermont.
Rates start at $450 on weekdays and range from $550 to $3,000 on weekends.
