Anantara holds tournament for Thailand’s favorite pachyderm

Long associated with elephant conservation efforts, Anantara, the luxury hospitality brand for modern travelers, recently held the 2017 King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament from March 9 to 12 along Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River.

Now in its fifteenth year, the tournament is one of the biggest charitable events in Southeast Asia, raising over US$1.3 million (BHT 46 million) to support projects that better the lives of Thailand’s wild and domesticated elephants.

A total of 30 unemployed former street elephants will take part in this year’s festival, where they will be given full veterinary checks and care. The tournament has strict rules that all participating elephants must be domestically bred, not captured from the wild or smuggled.

The much-acclaimed tournament was recently awarded the silver medal for the Sports CSR Initiative of the Year at the Asia 2016 SPIA Sports Industry Awards, which applauds industry leaders that demonstrate a balance between business, community, and environment.
