After 200 years tucked away in the cargo hull of the sunken Metta Catharina, a cache of exceptional Russian-tanned leather was recovered and restored in the 1970s. The leather experts at Hermès later purchased a parcel of the hides, and artisans there experimented with the skins for 5 years to precisely re-create the original Russian tanning style. At long last, the Volynka leather will be unveiled this month in three limited-edition bags ($12,400 to $20,100).
