One of the most outstanding pieces to debut at the Watches and Wonders trade show in Geneva in March was Jaeger- LeCoultre’s Reverso One Precious Colours. Playing true to the Reverso’s debut in 1931, it features a stunning Art Deco design rendered entirely by hand, each ruler-straight line painted in grand feu enamel during a process that takes 80 hours. It comes in 18-karat white gold with various shades of green or in 18-karat pink gold with blue hues, both accented with diamonds.
The base metal of each is first sealed with a transparent enamel and then layers of opaque white enamel (which all need to be dried and fired) are applied. Then those colored geometric lines are painted with a fine-tipped brush on both the flat surfaces and the more challenging rounded edges of the case. It is painstaking, breathless work, a remarkable showcase of technique and craftsmanship.
