Many travelers are rethinking their traditional European trips this summer due to heat waves and high hotel rates. Instead, they’re opting for less crowded, lesser-known destinations, according to a new Chase Travel report highlighted by Bloomberg. Cities like Brussels, Munich, Zurich, and Warsaw are seeing increased tourist interest, followed by Amsterdam and Vienna.

Misty Belles, vice president for global public relations at Virtuoso, a luxury travel adviser group, told Bloomberg that travelers are looking for more affordable alternatives to popular destinations like Italy and France. Rising prices are a major concern, with average rates for luxury hotels in Europe reaching over $1,700 per night—a significant increase from pre-pandemic prices.

Extreme weather conditions have also influenced travel decisions. Europe experienced severe flooding, wildfires, and record heat in 2023, prompting travelers to seek cooler destinations further north. Virtuoso data shows a notable increase in bookings to the Netherlands, Austria, and Germany.

While popular destinations like London, Rome, and Paris remain top choices, the timing of travel is crucial for those set on visiting iconic spots like Mykonos or the Amalfi Coast. Rebecca Masri, founder of the luxury travel app Little Emperors, suggests visiting in September for off-peak savings and more pleasant weather.
