We track tested the new Bentley Continental GT Speed last month and found it to be plush, fleet, and surprisingly nimble. Disguised in an acid-green-and-black wrap, Bentley has now unveiled the fourth-generation model, showing both similarities and differences compared to its predecessor.

For a deeper understanding of the new Conti’s style, a brief history lesson is in order. Back in 1952, Bentley released the Continental R, an elegant, long-wheelbase coupé defined by three primary lines: a power line along the hood, a sloping roofline, and a gently curving haunch. It was sleek and capable, claiming the title of fastest four-seater in the world and delivering swift, comfortable travel.

By 1998, Bentley needed revival after years under Rolls-Royce, only building 440 vehicles that year. Volkswagen Group’s leader, Ferdinand Piëch, envisioned a rebirth, leading to a Continental GT prototype debut in 2002 and the final version in 2003. This model shared the original’s three-line design and introduced Piëch’s W-12 engine, delivering 7,500 cars in its first year.

The new Continental GT Speed, designed by Robin Page, offers several firsts, including a single headlamp design since the S2 in 1959 and a rear-biased weight distribution of 49/51. The headlamps, similar to those on the $2 million Bacalar, add a dominant presence to the front end. The front bumper’s cut line meets the hood, and an off-center radar sensor on the grille gives a cyclops effect. The body panels are now superformed with sharper-radius edges, and the tail has a more angular shape with flusher surfaces.

The latest GT Speed’s looks are subjective; some may prefer the previous model’s streamlined simplicity. However, the new edition’s enhanced tech and power suggest it may outshine its predecessor, even if its styling isn’t as universally appealing.
