The term “day boat" is common but vague, referring to anything from a 20-foot center console to a 65-foot open cruiser. The most focused design this year was Barton & Gray’s Daychaser, a $2.75 million 48-footer with salty, down-east looks. Naval architect Doug Zurn designed the navy-blue wide-bodied hull with an open bow, “We expect all 12 guests to be up front at some point," he says with generous lounges and more seating at the rear.
The boat has a protected area beneath the hardtop where passengers can congregate in inclement weather. The design also includes a utilitarian cabin with a single stateroom, a head with shower, and a small navigation station or “Zoom room" for remote working. The Daychaser aligns with the way most people use their boats: shorter outings hosting guests, rather than couples on overnight cruises. As one would expect from a down-easter, the cockpit is dressed in teak, with an outdoor galley and bar. The jet-drive configuration gives the Daychaser strong maneuverability, while a lack of props allows it to land on beaches and sandbars.
