With its new high-jewelry collection, Boucheron manages to bring this ephemeral concept into stunning existence. Starting with a theme based on contemplation, creative director Claire Choisne wanted to capture the essence of the sky in necklace form, and was searching for the right material to do so. Google led her to Dr. Ioannis Michaloudis, a Greek artist and former MIT research affiliate who’s been working on the application of aerogel in the visual arts.
Consisting of 99.8 percent air and just 0.2 percent silica, aerogel gives off a unique blue tint which in certain light mimics the shade of the sunset. It has never before been used in jewelry. The resulting Goutte de Ciel (Sky Drop) necklace was then encapsulated in rock crystal, set in white gold and adorned with 6,162 round diamonds, a total of 108.17 carats. Choisne admits that, due to the rarity of the aerogel “stone," a real value cannot be placed on it, but insists the rarity is what matters.
