Since its inception in 2018, Massena LAB, founded by William Massena, has become known for its collaborative approach to watchmaking. One of the standout creations from Massena LAB came in 2022 with the Magraph, co-designed with independent Swiss watchmaker Raúl Pagès. This watch was notable for its M660 caliber, marking the first proprietary movement for a Massena LAB timepiece, and it carried an attractive price tag under $10,000. The duo recently released an exclusive limited edition for Phillips, the 1952 Observatory Dial, and now they have unveiled a sequel to the Magraph: the limited edition Absinthe by Massena LAB and Raúl Pagès.

The collaboration between Massena LAB and Raúl Pagès has consistently yielded exceptional results. William Massena reflected on their partnership, saying, “When I first had the chance to work with Raúl in 2022, the collaboration came together naturally. As we grow Massena LAB, it’s very important to me to continue working with independent and small watchmakers—it is really at the heart of the business." He noted that despite Pagès’ increasing acclaim, including winning the first-ever Louis Vuitton Watch Prize for Independent Creatives, Pagès continues to contribute to Massena LAB’s projects.

The new Absinthe watch builds on the technical foundation of their first collaboration, featuring the next generation M690 caliber. Like the M660, the M690 is a manually wound, Swiss-made movement with hand-finishing and a 60-hour power reserve. A significant change in the M690 is the repositioning of the small seconds subdial from six o’clock to nine o’clock, reminiscent of the lepine movement designed by 18th-century watchmaker Jean-Antoine Lépine. This historical nod is sure to appeal to discerning collectors. Additionally, the words “observatory precision" form a secondary “subdial” at three o’clock, enhancing the watch’s symmetry, a design element seen in some Panerai models.

Collectors who purchase one of the 99 pieces of the Absinthe will also have the option to send their watch to the Horological Society of New York for testing as part of its Chronometer Certification Program. Upon passing HSNY’s stringent tests, which exceed the international ISO 3159 standards, owners will receive a certificate detailing their timepiece’s performance.

The Absinthe is housed in a 38.5mm stainless steel case and features a striking ombre green dial, inspired by the Green Fairy, the nickname for the absinthe spirit. Priced at $8,675, the watch can be secured with a $2000 deposit. Orders open today on the Massena LAB website, with deliveries starting in July in small batches of five to seven pieces per month on a first-come, first-served basis. This offering presents an excellent opportunity for collectors to own a piece of Massena LAB’s and Raúl Pagès’ continued horological innovation.
