Claude Monet’s “Meules à Giverny” from 1893 is set to headline Sotheby’s Modern Evening Auction next month, with a pre-sale estimate exceeding $30 million. This iconic piece, depicting Monet’s famous haystacks, comes to auction almost 150 years after the first Impressionist exhibition opened in Paris in 1874.
Allegra Bettini, head of the Modern Evening Auction in New York, highlighted the revolutionary nature of Monet’s work, particularly with pieces like “Meules à Giverny,” which exemplify the transformative ideas and techniques of Impressionism during a pivotal moment for the artist.
While “Meules à Giverny” may not surpass the record-breaking sale of Monet’s “Meules” five years ago, which fetched $110.7 million, it remains an extraordinary find for collectors, especially as one of Monet’s last paintings focused on haystacks.
Originally owned by American landscape painter Dwight Blaney, the painting has a rich provenance, having been lent to prestigious institutions like Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts before becoming part of an impressive private collection, from which Sotheby’s will also auction other notable works.
Benjamin Doller, Sotheby’s chairman of the Americas, praised the collection as the culmination of a passionate collector’s lifelong dedication to understanding the pioneering spirit of Impressionism. The auction will feature other remarkable works, including another Monet piece, “Bennecourt,” Pablo Picasso’s “Courses de taureaux,” and Camille Pissarro’s “Paysage aux Pâtis, Pontoise, la moisson.”
With such exceptional artworks on offer, the auction is expected to generate significant interest and potentially yield substantial returns for sellers.
