Meticulous is the first word that springs to mind when discussing luxury eyewear brand Morgenthal Frederics. Renowned for its mastery of water buffalo horn, which the firm’s highly skilled artisans carve, bend, layer into some of the most eye-catching forms around, Morgenthal Frederics also doesn’t take itself too seriously, injecting bold color and a sense of whimsy wherever it can. The latest silhouette, the appropriately named Flora Horn, is a testament to all of the above and honors a partnership with the New York Botanical Garden.

“We jumped at the opportunity to partner with this legendary institution," Jessica Kaczor, the brand’s chief retail officer, tells Robb Report. “And we’re honored to dedicate a portion of our proceeds to support their incredible work in botanical research, children’s education, and horticulture programs." Handcrafted in Germany over the course of several months (though the result of a years-long process that from concept to execution), the cat eye frames feature unique flourishes and cutouts at the temples and arms, calling to mind the beauty of the famed garden’s blooms.
In line with the NYBG’s ethos, Morgenthal Frederics also shares a commitment to sustainability. All horn is ethically sourced (derived only after the animal’s life cycle) and the factory itself is wind and water-powered and utilizes any waste from the frame-making process as fertilizer for surrounding vineyards. “We are very proud that the entire process is done in the most eco conscious way possible," says Kaczor.

Eco concerns aside, what really makes horn a superior material beloved by the likes of Spike Lee? The material is incredibly light in contrast to more widely used acetate. In fact, one fan of the horn frames who is also a migraine sufferer told me that the reduced weight made a significant difference in the frequency of their headaches. Neither I nor Morgenthal Frederics are making any medical claims, but it is an interesting tidbit.
The line is available online or at any of Morgenthal’s 13 boutiques. (The two Madison Avenue locations are at peak bloom right now and decked out in florals to honor the collaboration.) It’s the perfect pick-me-up for any green thumbs who may have missed out on this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.
