In 1946, Alastair Robertson-Aikman founded the Scale Model Equipment Company (SME) in the U.K. to produce precision models for engineering. By the 1950s, SME expanded into scientific instruments and Formula 1, but it was Robertson-Aikman’s development of a tonearm for his ambitious audio system that cemented SME’s reputation in high-fidelity audio. The SME tonearm became a benchmark in LP playback, leading the company to manufacture top-tier turntables.
To mark its 75th anniversary, SME released the Model 60 One of One Signature Edition, a limited-edition turntable available in one of 75 custom colors. Priced at $88,789, this turntable is a technical masterpiece, featuring vibration-damping technology, an advanced belt-driven platter, and the exclusive Series VA tonearm, made from a polymer-resin material that minimizes resonance.
Tested at Mike Rose’s Excel Audio in Newport Beach, the 106-pound Model 60, paired with high-end components, demonstrated exceptional sound quality. It delivered a balanced response across the frequency spectrum, combining sledgehammer bass with incredible finesse, surpassing even more expensive digital systems in the ability to reveal subtle details and “hear between notes."
