A historic Upper East Side hotel is set to become one of the city’s most coveted housing developments.
Since its 1926 establishment on East 76th Street near Fifth Avenue and Central Park, The Surrey has been synonymous with discreet luxury in Manhattan’s esteemed neighborhoods. Hosting notable guests like JFK and Hollywood icons Bette Davis and Claudette Colbert, it’s now undergoing a transformation into The Surrey Residences by British developers David and Simon Reuben of Reuben Brothers.
Featuring 14 bespoke residences starting from the 11th floor, offerings include two-bedroom, three-bedroom layouts, and a luxurious duplex penthouse. While pricing details aren’t disclosed, the residences are expected to begin around $8 million, with buyers able to select their interior design package from furnishings curated by Invisible Collection.
The Surrey, originally designed by Schwartz & Gross, is undergoing renovations led by BKSK Architects. Upon completion, it will house the first New York location of the renowned Italian eatery Casa Tua and an exclusive private members’ club.
For the Reuben brothers, known for their extensive investment portfolio and horse racing ventures, this marks their inaugural New York development. Their acquisition of The Surrey in 2020 for $150 million, $65 million below the initial asking price of $215 million, reflects their strategic investment approach.
As New York City’s real estate market picks up momentum, developers like the Reubens are joining others in constructing condo towers on the Upper East Side, including Elad Group’s boutique luxury condo, THE 74, and The Treadwell, an Art Deco-inspired high-rise.
