Entering a huge industrial building on a windswept airfield in the south of England, I find myself face-to-face with one of the world’s greatest living automotive designers and with him his latest creation. If you know Gordon Murray for anything, you know him as the man who penned the unparalleled 1992 McLaren F1, the naturally aspirated, one-plus-two-configured, 240 mph world-beater widely considered to be the greatest supercar ever built.
His newest car, the T.50, the first created under his own name at Gordon Murray Automotive, is the F1’s successor. The T.50 has a naturally aspirated 3.9-liter V-12 making 700 hp (with the help of roof-fed ram-air induction). The engine was made specifically for the project by British Formula 1 specialist Cosworth. It revs higher (12,100 rpm), weighs less (392 pounds) and has greater power density than any naturally breathing V-12 ever fitted to a road car.
