Walk Japan’s latest tour is a 6-day, 5-night journey to the beautiful Izu region, a UNESCO Global Geopark.
TOKYO, JAPAN (15th July 2025) – Walk Japan is pleased to introduce the Izu Wayfarer, the company’s latest self-guided tour exploring the dramatic volcanic landscape and epoch-making history of the Izu Peninsula, a seafood heaven. Although only a short journey from the Tokyo megalopolis, this rural peninsula of lava-formed coastlines and charming port towns has witnessed pivotal moments in Japan’s culture and international history. Travellers on this tour experience scenic coastal walks, intertwined with visits to historic towns and onsen thermal hot springs at their own pace for an immersive exploration of Izu’s unique geology and heritage.
Key features:
- Dramatic basalt-columnar Jogasaki cliffs, sweeping volcanic sandy beaches, the pristine waterfalls of Kawazu, and panoramic views over the shimmering, metallic-blue Pacific Ocean.
- William Adams, an Englishman who became a samurai and inspiration for the novel and TV-series Shogun, and the American Commodore Perry and his Black Ship fleet.
- Paths follow clifftops, the Nobel prize-winning Yasunari Kawabata’s Odoriko Izu Dancer trail and the famed Amagi Tunnel, and lead to bucolic fishing ports.
- Rejuvenating onsen hot spring baths and some of the freshest seafood caught around Izu’s coastline including buri yellowtail and ise-ebi spiny lobster.
