When it comes to an intimate, close-up “look" into a recording, good headphones can reveal intricate details and refinements that speakers might miss. Each pair of headphones can offer different strengths in areas like transient response, transparency, bass extension, or timbral accuracy, making it essential for listeners to choose based on their preferences.

In the realm of state-of-the-art headphones, there has never been more variety and technological advancement. Since the 1960s, electrostatic models have been the top choice for critical listeners. However, in the past decade, other technologies like planar dynamics and ribbons have also made significant strides, providing competition to traditional designs from brands like Stax and Sennheiser.

One notable company in this space is Meze Audio, founded in 2011 by Antonio Meze in Romania. Meze gained a reputation for their novel designs and excellent performance. In 2018, Meze began collaborating with Rinaro Isodynamics, a Ukrainian company specializing in planar magnetic drivers, resulting in the development of the Meze Empyrean II, a $3,000 headphone model.

Weighing in at a relatively light 385 grams (13.5 oz), the Empyrean II features a sleek carbon-fiber frame and leather headrest supporting oval transducer housings with circumaural earcups. The CNC-milled aluminum housings with Art Deco-inspired perforated metal grilles add to the headphones’ aesthetic appeal.

Meze and Rinaro aimed to improve upon existing designs with their Isodynamic Hybrid Array Driver technology. This involves an oval transducer that occupies the entire driver enclosure, combining switchback and spiral-shaped voice coils in a single matrix to propagate sound more naturally around the ear. The MZ3 Hybrid Magnet Array, which places neodymium magnets on either side of Rinaro’s patented Isoplanar diaphragm, further enhances performance. This diaphragm is a featherweight polymer membrane with a conductive layer weighing just 0.16 g, all sandwiched between perforated, fiberglass-infused ABS plastic.

The result is a holistic sonic experience where the Empyrean II combines the transparency, speed, and detail of electrostatics with the bass authority of conventional dynamic drivers. The headphones boast an impressive frequency response from 8 Hz to 110,000 Hz, although most humans can only hear up to 20,000 Hz. Despite this wide range, the Empyrean II remains balanced, avoiding the bright or biting sound characteristic of some high-end models.

Total harmonic distortion (THD) is virtually inaudible at less than 0.05 percent across the entire frequency range. With a 32-ohm rating and a sensitivity of 105 dB at 1V, the Empyrean II can deliver up to 130 dB SPL, although sustained exposure to such high levels can be damaging to hearing.

Comfort is crucial for long-term listening, and the Empyrean II offers two styles of earpads, both finished in suede-like Alcantara: the Duo, which adds black leather on the base half, and the Angled Alcantara pads, which reveal even greater musical detail. Both options attach magnetically, making them easy to swap without physical connectors.

For those seeking the ultimate in detail resolution, the Stax SR-X9000 electrostatic headphones might be a better choice, although they are more than double the price of the Empyrean II and require a dedicated amplifier. The Empyrean II offers ten optional cable choices to connect via a Mini XLR to various terminations.

For travel and storage, the Empyrean II comes with a molded, foam-lined shockproof case, underscoring its precision and remarkable accuracy. These headphones are not just about sound quality but also about a holistic user experience, blending comfort, design, and technical excellence.
